Hitting an IC agency’s deadline with award-winning news

Award-winning news story written on behalf of Network Rail for IC agency AB.

Sector: Rail

Client: AB for Network Rail

Services: Newsletter writing (internal communications)

How I helped: An editor at AB was on a deadline and needed a story written promptly but was out of the office and couldn’t do it himself. So, he commissioned me to write it. I interviewed, wrote and delivered the story on time and won an award of excellence for the IC agency’s client.

Client

AB is one of the UK’s longest-running internal communications (IC) agencies, creating content and building channels for some of the world’s best-known organisations. The agency has used my writing, editing, and proofreading services for 16 years. I was also its freelance chief sub-editor from 2003-17.

Challenge

AB needed an employee news story written fast by a trusted writer with journalistic instincts. AB’s publishing director asked me to use my journalist training, knowledge of the sensitivities of writing for business, and rail sector experience to interview the managing director of a craft brewery for Network Rail’s Insight magazine.

Action

After casting an experienced eye over the brief, I researched the topic, decided what to ask, and interviewed the Camden Town Brewery’s managing director. Active listening and relevant questions formed the basis of the content to create an informative news story.

Result

The news story won an Award of Excellence for the IC agency in the Institute of Internal Communication (IoIC) South region’s Awards of Communication Excellence. Read some of the past issues of Insight magazine.
